Countrywide continues slide as foreclosures rise

Late payments and foreclosures rose in December at Countrywide Financial Corp., causing the stock of the nation's biggest mortgage lender to continue its free fall this week.

A day after losing more than a quarter of its market value, shares of the Calabasas, Calif.-based company, which is also the biggest mortgage lender in the Chicago area, closed Wednesday at $5.12, down 35 cents, or 6.4 percent, on the New York Stock Exchange. The stock plummeted 19 percent before rallying.

That decline followed losses of 9 percent Monday and 28 percent Tuesday, when the company, whose stock was trading near $40 about a year ago, denied speculation that it was on the verge of filing for bankruptcy.

Investing in real estate not only involves lot of money but one has to exercise some caution. First of all thorough research is of utmost importance. Do not delve into real estate without doing a lot of research. Keep in mind its a business that requires hard work, plenty of time and an abundance of money.

However, this type of venture can pay off enormously in the end. The thrill of this type of dealing, buying, fixing and selling is a magnificent step.

As with any endeavour knowing as much as you can before you lay out cash is very beneficial. When looking at the prospective home, look for anything that will need to be fixed or updated.

Colletto a poor choice as coordinator

Two questions: 1) If Marinelli is fired what happens to Millen? I don't know how he's hung on this long and I'm at the point where I no longer blame him, he's probably doing the best he can, he's simply in over his head. I blame WCF for tolerating such obvious incompetence. 2) If WCF won't fire Millen what can I do as a football fan? After 30 years, I simply can't stomach this team anymore. If WCF doesn't care whether the Lions win why should I?

Barratt order book falls in tough market

The faltering housing market has taken its toll on Barratt Developments, Britain's second-biggest housebuilder, after its forward order book for new homes has fallen for the first time in almost four years.

Barratt, which bought its competitor Wilson Bowden in a £2.2 billion deal last April, also reported a slight fall in its average selling price across private and social homes from £179,500 to £177,900, which reveals the extent to which the market for new homes has changed.

Forward sales for the first six months of the year stand at £1.26 billion, compared with £1.34 billion at this point last year.

On a pro forma basis, assuming Wilson Bowden had been acquired on July 1, 2006, total completions fell from 10,623 to 9,056, reflecting an expected reduction in outlets, lower buy-to-let activity and tougher market conditions.
