Oil prices fall more than US$1 on economic worries, rise in US crude ...

Asian markets were mixed after the Dow Jones industrial average dropped 0.3 percent overnight.

A report of growing U.S. crude stockpiles also weighed on oil prices.

In its weekly inventory snapshot, the U.S. Energy Department's Energy Information Administration said crude and gasoline stocks rose 3.6 million barrels each during the week ended Jan. 25. Analysts had expected crude stockpiles to rise 2.3 million barrels and gasoline inventories to rise 1.9 million barrels.

Supporting prices were expectations that the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries would not raise its production quotas when it meets Friday in Vienna, and word that a 315,000 barrel a day Canadian oil sands field has been temporarily shut down due to freezing temperatures. Canada is the single largest supplier of crude oil to the U.S.

The Shameful State of the Union

The 2008 appropriations bills include $506.9 billion for the Department of Defense and the nuclear weapons activities of the Department of Energy, plus an additional $189.4 billion for military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. [1]

Other military funding is located in the Department of Homeland Security and other agencies.

Congress has approved nearly $700 billion to fight the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. This is the appropriated amount. It doesn't include costs to society — loss of life, injuries, etc. The amount spent on war-fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq now exceeds the inflation-adjusted amount spent on the Vietnam War. [2]

The United States accounts for roughly half of the world's military expenditures. [3]

Depending on how you count, more than half of all discretionary federal spending is now directed to the military.

Kenya: Equity Market Loses Sh40bn in Panic Selling

The equity market on the Nairobi Stock Exchange lost Sh40 billion in value, equivalent to five per cent of the market capitalisation on the first day of trading this year.

Small investors sold their shares in panic over the ethnic violence and the political uncertainty that has gripped the country.
