Still Infy, but not Infy-Nity

It's no longer the bellwether for the markets, but Infosys' numbers are still scrutinized through a magnifying glass. Partly because there's an army of analysts out there who have made a living off Infosys for years. And, partly because the company is an index heavyweight, which automatically puts it on any India watcher's radar.

So, what should we make of Infy's Q3 numbers? Every brokerage has given the same initial answer: topline below estimate, bottomline above estimate. Some have added, that they will wait for Cognizant's numbers early next month, to take any call on Infosys.

Here's our quick estimate. Infosys gave Rs.1232 crore as PAT. Out of that Rs 50 crore was a tax writeback. Logically, one should take that out for any future projection, but do keep in mind that in Q2 Infy's tax payout was much higher than average.

Shorter menu could be big for Mt. Pleasant pizza eatery

No bread was available for the pasta.

Oddly, the only water available is to purchase "by the bottle," and there is an up-charge of 50 cents if you want "decaf" coffee products.

We were told the pastries were imported from Italy and that the cannoli and tiramisu were made in-house. We did not order dessert.

Service was very slow, and many tables received their meals in bits and pieces. Our server was pleasant, but enthusiasm does not curb an appetite nor does it act as salve when the kitchen is slow. Part of our order was forgotten.

La Pizzeria seems lost in translation. Neither the front of the house nor the back of the house was able to manage carry-out, eat-in, clean, clear, serve, cook and the check.

Hopefully, La Pizzeria will learn the "less is more" lesson.

Label Focus #11: Big Dada

I think those people don't run labels for a decade, though. They just go to work for a major. I guess there was an arrogance there as well - a sense that it could be done better than it was being done. Luckily I've had that beaten out of me.

How do you feel the label has changed over the last ten years?

It's got bigger and a bit more businesslike. But it's pretty much unchanged in most ways. For the first six or seven years it was just me, then Etienne Tron (now of Radio Clit) came and worked for me for a couple of years, then in 2005 I went part time to spend more time writing obscure fiction and Jamie Collinson took over as label manager. And obviously we get a huge amount of help, support and hard work from the people at Ninja, which has been a constant. It still has the same backs-against-the-wall feel to it.
